Spyderco - The Knife That Changed an Industry
Posted by Arms Protection on Aug 20th 2025
A Legacy of Innovation and Design
Founded by Sal Glesser in Golden, Colorado, Spyderco has a rich history of pioneering features that are now commonplace in the world of folding knives. The company's name itself was inspired by the high-performance "Spyder" sports cars, a nod to their mission of creating high-performance cutting tools. Spyderco's true legacy began in 1981 with their first folding knife, the C01 Worker. This knife introduced the now-iconic **Trademark Round Hole**, a design breakthrough that allowed for fast, one-handed, and ambidextrous opening. This innovation, along with the pocket clip and serrated edges, changed the industry forever.
Quality Through Collaboration and Materials
Spyderco is known for its unwavering commitment to quality and experimentation. They have innovated with over 20 different steels over the years, including the use of powder metallurgy in a production knife. Their collaborations with a diverse group of custom knife makers, athletes, and self-defense instructors have produced some of the most sought-after designs in the industry. Whether for private citizens, law enforcement, or first responders, Spyderco knives are recognized for their quality, reliability, and distinctive design.

SPYDERCO DELICA4 EMERSON OPENER
Spyderco has steadily grown to become one of the leaders in the cutlery industry. In addition to a worldwide distribution network and manufacturing resources in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China, their innovation has also earned an impressive portfolio of patents, trademarks, and industry awards. More importantly, it has earned the trust and loyalty of countless thousands of dedicated knife users around the world-an audience to whom Spyderco is extremely grateful.
SPYDERCO CIVILIAN G-10 SPYDEREDGE
The Spyderco Matriarch 2 was inspired by a request for a personal-protection tool for women, evolving from the original Civilian model. It combines the Civilian’s aggressive, fully serrated VG-10 blade with the lightweight handle of the Endura 4.
This version features a Trademark Round Hole for one-handed opening and an Emerson Opener hook that automatically deploys the blade when drawn. The handle is made of fiberglass-reinforced nylon with a Bi-Directional Texture for a secure grip. It also has a strong back lock and a four-position pocket clip. The knife is available in a satin or all-black finish.
SPYDERCO BUG G-10 1.27 BLACK
Spyderco's micro-sized slip joint pocketknives have always been much more than novelties. Despite their diminutive size, they are fully functional, impressively sharp, and, thanks to the Trademark Round Hole in their blades, far easier to open than knives with traditional nail nicks. Traditionally, the Bug, Honeybee, and Grasshopper have always been expressed with stainless steel handles, but now these popular designs are available with G-10 scales in a choice of three colors. The peel-plytextured scales provide an enhanced grip and come in black, red, and blue. All knives feature razor-sharp full-flatground blades crafted from Sandvik 12c27 stainless steel.
